OREGANO

Scientific NameOriganum vulgare

DescriptionGray green leaves similar to Marjoram with a stronger flavor. Often times the names Marjoram and Oregano are used interchangeably.

PropagationOregano grows best in sunny, well-drained areas of your garden. This herb is best started from seed in spring.

Culinary UsesWorks well with fish dishes. Greek and Italian dishes use Marjoram as well. Marjoram does better if it is not cooked with high heat. The heat damages the aroma, so it is best to use it in uncooked or lightly cooked dishes. Oregano does better for dishes that require longer cooking times.

Medicinal UsesUsed to treat cold symptoms, coughs, and flu. The action of Marjoram is to relax the bronchial muscles. It also can help to improve digestion and relieve gas. Sweet Marjoram oil can also be used topically to treat headaches and sore muscles.
